Altgeld Gardens
Altgeld Gardens bears its name after John Peter Altgeld, an Illinois governor in the 1890.
Altgeld Gardens is also the name of the housing project developed in 1945, on the south side of Chicago. This residential area consists mainly in two-story row houses, and is being populated by African American residents.
Currently, there are about 3,400 residents living in this complex, which includes its own schools, maintenance staff, on-site social services and medical facilities.
Altgeld Gardens' boundaries are 130th Street on the north and 138th Street on the south, from the Bishop Ford Freeway on the east and the Calumet River on the west.
Among notable residents of the area were the well known NBA basketball players Tim Hardaway and Terry Cummings.
